Reflection on Research and Scholarship

My experience with research and scholarship has been part of a very interesting journey. I started with the research journey with many fears, and now I have a great desire and interest in research. I am grateful to faculty, Dr. Volk, for believing in me and developing me thus far.

My greatest fear at the beginning of my doctoral journey was in the area of research and scholarship. I never thought of or envisioned myself or called myself a researcher because I knew from people who had studied research that it is challenging to conduct and grasp. I felt like research and scholarship were for highly intelligent students. So I was terrified when I registered for my first research course, and my main concern was how to understand the difference between qualitative and quantitative research, the methods, concepts, and data analysis. Another area of a huge concern was how to do the research; I knew it would be very challenging.

The support and encouragement I received from the faculty made all the difference. Feedback from professors contributed to and raised my resilience level and gave me hope that conducting research was possible. Another factor contributing to my confidence in research was when my team and  did a presentation on sexuality, and we won third place at the Liberty University research week. The outcome was that my confidence is now relatively high to keep developing competencies, skills, and knowledge in research and scholarship. Throughout my dissertation journey, I have learned a lot and continue to grow to be competent as a researcher.

My growth area is understanding improving on all the concepts of research and scholarship, so I have enrolled in the Emerging Scholars Program at the University of Florida to enhance my skills and competency as a researcher. My confidence in God has been a great source of hope and encouragement. I see research as a good idea because the Bible is full of people who walked with God and wrote their experiences.

Luke 1:1-3 reads

Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled[a] among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus.

If God used Luke, the author, through research and investigation to write the good news, then I think that advancing in my research competency will help contribute to the well-being of society.
